API 5L X70 PSL2 Steel Pipe Description
API 5L X70 PSL2 welded pipe is a welded steel pipe produced according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard API 5L, made of X70 steel grade (minimum yield strength of ≥485 MPa), belonging to the PSL2 (Product Specification Level 2), dedicated to high-pressure, high safety requirements of oil and gas pipeline systems.
Implementing standards:
API 5L: The specification covers the production and inspection requirements for welded steel pipes (e.g. ERW resistance welding, LSAW direct seam submerged arc welding, etc.).
PSL2 grade: Compared with PSL1, the requirements for chemical composition, mechanical properties, and non-destructive testing are more stringent, and additional tests such as the Charpy impact test and hydrostatic test are required.
Manufacturing Process and Core Advantages
Manufacturing process:
Electric Resistance Welding (ERW): suitable for small and medium diameter pipes, offering low cost and high efficiency.
LSAW: used for large diameter (e.g., 219~3650mm), thick-walled pipes, with high strength of weld seam and excellent pressure resistance.
Core Advantage:
High safety: ensuring the weld seam is free of defects through strict non-destructive testing (e.g., ultrasonic, X-ray).
Corrosion resistance: can be covered with epoxy resin, 3PE (three-layer polyethylene) and other anti-corrosion coatings to extend the service life.

Chemical composition (mass percent):
Carbon (C), manganese (Mn): Stricter control is applied, with some models also adding chromium (Cr), molybdenum (Mo), and other alloying elements to enhance corrosion resistance.
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.025%, phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.030%: These limits are set to reduce the impact of impurities on welding performance.
Mechanical properties:
Yield strength: ≥ 485 MPa (70,300 psi).
Tensile strength: ≥ 570 MPa (82,700 psi).
Elongation: ≥ 18% (at 50 mm), with low-temperature impact toughness to meet the -20 °C environmental requirements.
