What is Drill Pipe?
Drill pipe, is hollow, thin-walled, steel or aluminium alloy piping that is used on drilling rigs. It is hollow to allow drilling fluid to be pumped down the hole through the bit and back up the annulus. It comes in a variety of sizes, strengths, and wall thicknesses, but is typically 27 to 32 feet in length . Longer lengths, up to 45 feet, exist .

Range 1 (R1) is shortest in length, more common for sizing production tubing or casing, and ranges from 18 to 22 ft.
Range 2 (R2) is considered the standard length for drill pipe and ranges from 27 to 31 ft.
Range 3 (R3) is common in casing and also deployed in deep water drilling applications. The increased length decreases the number of tool joints in each stand of drill pipe. The fall back being that the load exerted on each tool joint is greater increasing wear and reducing the expected life of the drill pipe. R3 ranges from 38 to 45 ft.

Diameter
The outer diameter (OD) of the drill pipe is offered in nominal sizes ranging from 2 3/8\" to 6 5/8\". The diameter of pipe is selected based on the borehole diameter. In order to effectively circulate drilling mud and minimize pressure losses, the ratio of drill pipe outside diameter to borehole diameter should be about 0.6.
Upset
The upset (thread-end finish) refers to the wall of the tool joint at the threaded connection. Drill pipe is offered with an internal upset (IU), an external upset (EU), or an internal-external upset (IEU).

IU
IU - In an internal upset increased thickness along the inside walls compensate for the metal removed in threading with a uniform, straight outside wall.

EU
EU - In an external upset the increased thickness along the outside diameter of the tubing compensates for the metal removed in threading with a straight bore.

IEU
IEU - In an internal-external upset thickness is increased along both the inside and outside walls of the pipe to compensate for the metal removed in threading.

Tool Joint
Each end of the pipe incorporates a tool joint, and is differentiated by the male threaded connection referred to as the "pin" and the female threaded connection which is referred to as the "box". They are pre-fabricated and welded onto the pipe. The tool joints provide high-strength, threaded connections. They are heat treated to a higher strength than the steel of the tube body in order to survive the rigors of drilling and numerous cycles of tightening and loosening of threads. Tool joints are specified by upset and thread type.
Threaded Connection
Tool joints incorporate threaded connections. They include standard API threads as well as proprietary threads. Each type of threaded connection is specified by threads per inch (TPI) and it's taper. Common API tool joints include regular (REG), full-hole (FH), and internal-flush (IF).

APPLICATION
Drill pipe is a steel pipe with a thread at the end. It is mainly used to connect the surface equipment of the drilling rig to the drilling and grinding equipment or bottom hole device at the bottom of the drilling well. Its main application areas include:

What tests are required on drill pipe?
hydrostatictest
Hydrostatic test is a pressure test commonly used in the production process of pipeline pipes. This test is used to check for leaks in welds or pipe bodies. To conduct the test, water is pumped into the pipe until a predetermined pressure is reached. Then monitor the pipes for leaks. If a leak is detected, the pipes will need to be repaired or replaced. Hydrostatic testing is an important quality control measure that helps ensure the safety and integrity of pipelines.
Bend test
Bend testing is a quality control test performed during steel pipe production. The purpose of the test is to check for the presence of cracks in the welds and to evaluate the strength of the steel. To conduct the test, a sample length of pipe is bent into a U-shape. Then inspect the steel for cracks or other signs of weakness. If found, the entire batch of steel pipes will be scrapped and a new batch made. However, if the bend test is successful, the steel pipe will be approved for use.
Flatten test
The flattening test is a steel pipe production test that evaluates the steel pipe's ability to resist deformation and cracking under stress. This is an important quality control measure that helps ensure that the steel used in line pipe products is of the highest possible quality. The test involves applying pressure to a steel pipe until it deforms or breaks. Flattening tests will reveal the pipe's longitudinal and circumferential crack resistance.
CVN impact test
The CVN impact test is a temperature test performed during the pipe production process to ensure the mechanical properties of the pipe. The tests were conducted at three different locations on the pipe: pipe body, weld seam and heat-affected zone. The test results are used to determine the Charpy V-notch impact strength of the pipe.
How to maintain drill pipe?
1. Regular maintenance: Drill pipe should be maintained regularly. The maintenance cycle should be determined according to the use environment and air humidity, and anti-rust oiling and dust-proof treatment should be carried out regularly.
2. Reasonable use: Drill pipe should be used within the rated drilling distance of the drilling rig. According to the drilling distance and the technical parameters of the drilling rig model, select the matching drill pipe.
3. Inspection and replacement: When the bend of the drill pipe exceeds the standard requirements or the thread is damaged and cannot work normally after use, it should be scrapped or returned to the factory for repair in time.
4. Pay attention to the drilling process: During the drilling process, you should always pay attention to the condition of the drilling rig and drill pipe. If drill sticking or locking occurs, drilling should be stopped immediately or drilled back and then drilled slowly to ensure that the drill pipe does not bend or deform.
5. Acid and alkali environment treatment: When operating in acid and alkali areas, attention should be paid to the corrosion of drill pipes. After drilling is completed, the surface of the rod body should be cleaned with clean water in time to remove the corrosion layer.
How to store drill pipe?
1. Storage location: The storage location should be flat, well-drained, and avoid accumulation of water, direct sunlight, and moisture from rain and snow. A fence should be set up on site with a height of no less than 2 meters to prevent outsiders from entering and to protect the drill pipe.
2. Storage method: When storing the drill pipe, it should be placed vertically on the ground and try to avoid the drill pipe falling sideways or horizontally. This reduces bending rates and facilitates inspection of drill pipe length, diameter and shape.
3. Storage conditions: The drill pipe needs to be stored in a dry place, and the bottom should be supported at multiple points to prevent deformation. Drill pipe should be maintained regularly during long-term storage.
4. Handling of seals: If the drill pipe has seals (such as O-rings), special attention should be paid to the use of seals. When damage, corrosion, etc. occur, seals must be replaced in time. After drilling is completed, the seal must be maintained and cleaned.
5. Avoid heavy pressure: Drill pipes must not be used as a support platform for heavy-duty tail stacking, and drill pipes must not be placed under piles of gravel or coal or stacked randomly.
