Through microalloying design and controlled rolling and cooling (TMCP), the grade achieves improved toughness while maintaining strength. Material Properties
L415 is a microalloyed high-strength steel whose toughness and weldability are controlled by composition and thermomechanical processing. The typical composition contains low carbon, controlled manganese, and trace additions of niobium, vanadium, and titanium. Combined with TMCP, this produces a fine-grained structure that provides:
Improved low-temperature toughness: Charpy V-notch impact energy verified at the test temperature specified in the order (commonly 0 °C or −20 °C), per API 5L / GB/T 9711 requirements for the grade and size.
Good weldability: carbon equivalent (CEIIW) ≤ 0.43 and weld-crack sensitivity (Pcm) ≤ 0.25 for PSL2.
Controlled ductility: yield-to-tensile ratio ≤ 0.93 (PSL2, for OD > 323.9 mm), preventing overmatching issues during field welding.

Production Process: HFI Welding

Uncoiling and flattening of the steel strip.
Continuous forming of the strip into a cylinder.
HFI welding: high-frequency induction heats the strip edges, and pressure rollers forge them together without filler metal.
Weld-seam heat treatment: the seam is normalized so its grain structure and mechanical properties match the base metal, preventing "hook cracks."

FAQ
What is the difference between L415 and X60?
They are two designations of the same grade: L415 expresses the minimum yield strength in MPa (415 MPa), while X60 expresses it in ksi (60 ksi ≈ 415 MPa). Both appear in API 5L.
What is the difference between PSL1 and PSL2 for L415?
PSL2 imposes tighter composition limits (S ≤ 0.015%, P ≤ 0.025%), mandatory Charpy impact testing, a maximum yield-to-tensile ratio of 0.93, and 100% UT of the weld seam. PSL1 has looser chemistry and no impact testing requirement. For critical or low-temperature service, PSL2 is the standard choice.
What delivery conditions are available for L415?
L415 is supplied in three delivery conditions: L415M (TMCP, C ≤ 0.12%), L415N (normalized, C ≤ 0.24%), or L415Q (quenched and tempered, C ≤ 0.18%). The M/N/Q suffix must be specified on the purchase order per API 5L 46th Edition.
