ASTM A106, ASTM A53, API 5L, EN 10216-2 Seamless carbon steel pipe Description
ASTM A106, ASTM A53, API 5L, EN 10216-2 Seamless carbon steel pipes are manufactured through hot rolling, cold rolling, or cold drawing processes after piercing steel billets or solid tube blanks. The production process includes billet heating, pressure piercing, rolling and extrusion, sizing and cooling, and nondestructive testing inspection. The main raw material is round billet, processed using equipment such as conical roller piercing machines. The final products must undergo rigorous mechanical performance testing and surface quality inspection.
Classification by Processing Method
Hot-rolled pipes: Typically with outer diameter >32mm, used for general structures, boilers, and oil pipelines
Cold-rolled pipes: Higher precision, with outer diameter down to 5mm, suitable for precision mechanical components
Detailed Production Process
Billet preparation: The raw material is round billet, which is cut into billets approximately 1 meter long by cutting machines and transported to furnaces via conveyor belts.
Heating: The billets are heated in furnaces to temperatures around 1200°C. The heating fuel is hydrogen or acetylene. Temperature control in the furnace is a critical factor.
Piercing: After exiting the furnace, the billets undergo pressure piercing. The most common piercing machine is the conical roller piercing machine, which offers high production efficiency, good product quality, large piercing expansion capacity, and can pierce various steel grades.
Rolling/Extrusion: After piercing, the billets undergo three-roll cross rolling, continuous rolling, or extrusion.
Sizing: After extrusion, sizing is performed. The sizing machine uses conical drill bits that rotate at high speed to punch holes into steel billets, forming pipes. The inner diameter of the pipe is determined by the outer diameter length of the sizing machine's drill bit.
Cooling: After sizing, pipes enter cooling towers where they are cooled by water spraying.
Straightening: After cooling, pipes undergo straightening.
NDT inspection: Pipes are then transported to metal flaw detectors (or hydrostatic testers) for internal inspection. Any internal cracks or bubbles will be detected.
Manual inspection: After quality inspection, pipes undergo strict manual selection.
Marking and storage: Inspected pipes are marked with paint for identification numbers, specifications, and production batch numbers before being lifted into warehouses by cranes.

Packaging
Before export, ASTM A106, ASTM A53, API 5L, EN 10216-2 steel pipes must undergo cleaning and rust prevention treatment, such as applying anti-rust oil or wrapping with anti-rust paper, to prevent rusting in humid marine environments.
Depending on the size and quantity of the pipes, appropriate packaging materials should be selected. Common packaging methods include bundling, wooden crating, or palletizing.
For long-length pipes: Bundling is typically used, where multiple pipes are secured together with steel or plastic straps, followed by wrapping with waterproof materials.
For small-diameter or precision pipes: Wooden or metal crates may be employed to provide additional protection.
