ASME SA179 Carbon Steel Tube
The chemical composition of SA179 steel pipe meets the following requirements:
Carbon, % 0.06-0.18
Manganese, % 0.27-0.63
Phosphorus, maximum content % 0.035
Sulfur, maximum content % 0.035
Heat Treatment
ASTM A179 steel pipes must be heat treated at 1200°F [650°C] or higher after the last cold drawing.
Surface Condition
Finished pipes must be free of flaking, and small amounts of oxides cannot be considered flaking.
The A179 standard is applicable to outer diameters from 1/8 inch to 3 inches [3.2 to 76.2 mm].
Quality inspection of ASME SA179 Cold Drawn Carbon Steel Pipe
Flattening test
Take 1 specimen from each batch of 2 steel pipes or use a piece of them for flattening test.
Expansion test
Take 1 specimen from each batch of 2 steel pipes or use a piece of them for expansion test.
Hydrostatic test
Each steel pipe shall be subjected to hydrostatic test, or replaced by non-destructive electrical test when otherwise required by the purchaser.
ASME SA179 Low-Carbon Steel tube Product Marking
In addition to the marking specified in A 450/A 450M, the marking may include the purchaser's company name and order number.
