ASTM A179 is a standard established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Its full title is "Standard Specification for Seamless Cold-Drawn Low-Carbon Steel Heat-Exchanger and Condenser Tubes." Below is an overview of its key specifications:
1. Scope:
Applies to seamless cold-drawn low-carbon steel tubes with minimum wall thickness, designed for heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer equipment.
OD range: 1/8" to 3" (3.2–76.2 mm), though smaller ODs and wall thicknesses may also be applicable.
Exceptions: Mechanical performance requirements may not apply to tubes with OD < 1/8" (3.2 mm) or wall thickness < 0.015" (0.4 mm).
2. Chemical Composition:
Carbon (C): 0.06–0.18%
Manganese (Mn): 0.27–0.63%
Phosphorus (P): ≤0.035%
Sulfur (S): ≤0.035%
Alloy steels are exempt due to additional special element requirements.
3. Manufacturing Process:
Seamless cold-drawn tubes must undergo heat treatment at ≥1200°F (650°C) after the final cold-drawing process.
4. Surface Condition:
No scaling allowed; minor oxide residues are acceptable.
5. Mechanical Properties & Testing Requirements:
Hardness: ≤72 HRB (Rockwell B scale).
Testing methods:
Flattening test: 2 samples per batch (1 sample per tube).
Flaring test or hemming test (as an alternative under specific conditions).
Hardness test.
Hydrostatic test: 100% testing per tube, or NDE (Non-Destructive Examination) if required by the purchaser.
6. Marking:
Must comply with general marking standards and include:
Purchaser's company name.
Order number.
