Finned tube is a highly efficient heat transfer element based on carbon steel. By adding fin structures (e.g. winding, welding or roll forming) to the surface of the metal tube, the heat dissipation area is significantly increased to enhance the heat transfer efficiency. Its core function is to accelerate heat transfer and it is suitable for industrial equipment, building HVAC and energy systems.

Structure and Composition

Base pipe:

Made of carbon steel (e.g. Q235, 20# steel, etc.), it has good thermal conductivity and mechanical strength, and can withstand certain pressure and temperature.
The common tube diameter ranges from DN15 to DN50, adapting to the compact design needs of different scenarios.
Fin:

Combined with the base tube through high-frequency welding, winding moulding or kit process, they form a structure such as spiral, straight bar or V-shape.
The density and height of the fins directly affect the heat dissipation efficiency and are usually optimised to match specific working conditions.

Heat exchange efficiency:

The finned structure enlarges the heat dissipation area by 3 to 10 times, significantly increasing the rate of heat transfer.
The high thermal conductivity of carbon steel (thermal conductivity of approximately 45-50 W/m-K) ensures rapid heat transfer from the base tube to the fins.
Durability and economy:

Carbon steel is low cost and easy to work with, making it suitable for mass production.
Surface galvanisation, painting or antioxidant treatment extends service life in non-corrosive environments (typical life 5-15 years).
Manufacturing Technology and Performance Parameters

Manufacturing technology:

High-frequency welding: using high-frequency current to heat the contact surface of fins and base tube to achieve a high-strength, low-thermal resistance metallurgical bond.
Winding process: Spiral winding of metal tape on the base tube, fixed by mechanical pressure, suitable for small pipe diameter (e.g. DN15) scenarios.
Performance parameters:

Working pressure: ≤1.6MPa (conventional working condition).
Temperature resistance range: -20℃~350℃, extreme low-temperature embrittlement or high-temperature oxidation should be avoided.

Selection and limitation

Applicable environment: recommended for dry, non-strongly corrosive media (such as air, water, oil), wet or corrosive gas-containing scenarios need to strengthen the surface protection.
Alternatives: In highly corrosive or high humidity environments, stainless steel finned tubes can be used to improve corrosion resistance, but at a significantly higher cost.
