Differences between 1.5D and 3D steel elbows

  • Different curvature radii‌: The curvature radius of a 1.5D elbow is 1.5 times the outer diameter of the pipe, while that of a 3D elbow is 3 times the outer diameter. For example, for a DN100 pipe, the curvature radius of a 1.5D elbow is 150 mm, whereas a 3D elbow has a curvature radius of 300 mm.
  • Different fluid resistance‌: The bending arc of a 1.5D elbow is relatively gentle, allowing fluid to gradually change direction with less turbulence and energy loss, resulting in lower pressure drop. In contrast, a 3D elbow has a larger curvature radius, providing an even smoother turn for fluid flow. Its fluid resistance is smaller than that of a 1.5D elbow, with a lower pressure drop, making it more suitable for applications with strict fluid resistance requirements.
  • Different pipe stress‌: The sharp turn of a 1.5D elbow can cause concentrated stress in the pipe, leading to stress corrosion cracking in high-temperature or corrosive media. Due to its larger curvature radius, a 3D elbow distributes stress more evenly, effectively reducing pipe vibration and fatigue damage, thereby extending the pipeline's service life.
  • Different space requirements for installation‌: A 1.5D elbow is relatively smaller in size, occupying less space, making it ideal for space-constrained scenarios such as ship pipelines or high-rise building shafts. A 3D elbow, with its larger curvature radius, requires more installation space and is typically used in long-distance pipelines where space is more available.
  • Different manufacturing processes‌: A 1.5D elbow is usually produced through hot pressing or push-forming processes, allowing for large-diameter and thin-walled fittings with smooth inner walls. A 3D elbow is generally made by cold bending, where finished pipes are directly bent. This process is relatively simpler, though hot bending may also be used for large-diameter 3D elbows.
