What are the advantages of a plug valve?

  • Easy Operation: The valve is opened and closed by rotating the plug, making operation quick and easy. A simple 90° rotation fully opens or closes the valve, and the torque required is minimal, making operation effortless.
  • Low Fluid Resistance: When fully open, the plug valve's passage is virtually unobstructed, allowing fluid to flow in a straight line. This minimizes pressure loss, effectively reducing system energy consumption and improving fluid delivery efficiency.
  • Excellent Sealing Performance: When the plug valve is closed, the sealing surfaces between the plug and the valve body fit tightly together, achieving a strong seal and effectively preventing leakage. Plug valves using soft sealing materials offer particularly excellent sealing performance.
  • Wide Application: Suitable for a variety of media, including water, oil, gas, steam, and even some media containing particles or fibers. With the appropriate material and structure, plug valves can function effectively under varying pressure and temperature conditions.

What are the disadvantages of plug valves?

  • Sealing surface wear: During the opening and closing process, the plug and the sealing surface of the valve body move relative to each other, which can easily cause wear. This is especially severe with frequent operation or when the medium contains solid particles, affecting sealing performance and service life.
  • High machining precision requirements: To ensure a good fit and sealing performance between the plug and the valve body, high machining precision is required for both, making the process more difficult and the manufacturing cost relatively high.
  • Temperature and pressure limitations: Although plug valves can be used within a certain temperature and pressure range, their performance may be limited in high-temperature and high-pressure operating conditions. At high temperatures, the sealing material may age and deform, affecting the sealing effect. At high pressures, the plug may be subjected to excessive pressure, making it difficult to operate and even causing leakage.
  • Unsuitable for large-diameter pipes: As the diameter increases, the weight of the plug increases, requiring greater torque to rotate, making operation more difficult. Furthermore, ensuring the sealing performance of large-diameter plug valves is more difficult. Therefore, they are relatively rarely used in large-diameter pipes.
  • Limited Adjustment Accuracy: Although plug valves have a certain throttling capability, their flow adjustment accuracy is relatively poor, making it difficult to achieve precise flow control. They are inferior to specialized regulating valves such as regulating valves and throttling valves.
