The Function of Flange Connections

Flange connections provide a reliable sealing structure. By tightening the bolts, the flange tightly presses against the sealing gasket, achieving a seal and preventing fluid leakage. At flange connections, fluid can leak through two pathways: gasket leakage, where fluid seeps through the capillary action of the gasket material; and leakage at the contact surface, where fluid leaks from the interface between the gasket and the flange. Sealing is a crucial element in ensuring fluid transmission and equipment safety.

A flange achieves a seal by tightening the gasket with bolts. The gasket material is crucial for filling minor imperfections on the flange surface and preventing leakage. Due to mechanical deformation and vibration during manufacturing, the flange sealing surface will always have some unevenness. Even with fine machining of the metal-to-metal contact surfaces, minor imperfections are unavoidable, and these imperfections can lead to fluid leakage.
