What is astm a500 grade b structural tube properties

1. Physical Properties

A500 GRB steel pipes must have a yield strength of 345 MPa or higher (approximately 50 ksi), a tensile strength range of 400-550 MPa, and an elongation of not less than 18%. These mechanical properties ensure sufficient structural stability of the steel pipe under load.

2. Chemical Properties

The typical composition of ASTM A500 GrB grade steel is: carbon content ≤0.26%, manganese content ≤1.35%, and phosphorus and sulfur content controlled below 0.04% and 0.05%, respectively. This composition design ensures strength while also considering good weldability and cold bending performance.

3. Specifications

Strict specifications are applied to the dimensional tolerances, surface quality, straightness, and other physical properties of A500 GRB steel pipes. For example, the allowable deviation for side length is ±0.8 mm, the wall thickness deviation is ±10%, and the curvature does not exceed 0.2% of the length.

4. Production Process and Quality Control

The production of A500 GRB square and rectangular tubes typically employs high-frequency resistance welding (ERW) technology. First, hot-rolled or cold-rolled steel coils are uncoiled and leveled. Then, they are rolled into circular tube blanks through multiple passes. These blanks are then heated with high-frequency current to melt the edges and welded under pressure. Finally, the circular tubes are rolled into square or rectangular sections using a shaping die and subjected to online heat treatment to eliminate residual stress.
