What is the difference between stainless steel 316L and 317L?
316L and 317L are two grades of stainless steel with similar chemical compositions but slightly different properties. One major difference between these two grades is their corrosion resistance. While both grades have excellent corrosion resistance, 317L has excellent resistance to acids, especially those containing chloride, such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid.
Another significant difference is their heat resistance. Compared to 316L, which can withstand temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F), 317L provides greater creep strength at elevated temperatures and provides better overall performance in high-temperature applications.
In terms of applications, both grades can be used in a variety of industries such as chemical processing plants, food equipment manufacturing, pharmaceutical production facilities and marine engineering projects.
316L stainless steel has good general corrosion resistance, especially in acidic environments such as sulfuric acid. It is also resistant to chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (SCC) and pitting corrosion, making it suitable for marine applications.
317L stainless steel, on the other hand, has excellent corrosion properties compared to similar products. It contains higher levels of molybdenum, which enhances its ability to resist harsh chemicals such as chlorides and acids, including high-temperature hydrochloric acid.
The maximum operating temperature of 316L stainless steel is approximately 870°C (1600°F). This makes it suitable for many high temperature environments such as furnace components, annealing hoods and kiln linings. Its antioxidant capabilities also mean it can withstand exposure to hot gases and combustion products without corroding or degrading.
Stainless steel 317L has better heat resistance than 316L. It has a maximum operating temperature of approximately 950°C (1742°F), making it ideal for use in extreme high temperature applications such as chemical processing equipment and nuclear power plants. Its higher chromium content provides excellent corrosion protection at high temperatures.
