316L stainless steel pipe is made of austenitic stainless steel containing chromium, nickel and molybdenum elements, and its carbon content is lower than 316 grade. This low carbon content makes 316L stainless steel pipe more suitable for welding applications. Compared with other stainless steel materials, it has lower carbon content (about 0.03%). Because of this low carbon content, SS 316L steel pipe is considered a lower carbon version of grade 316 stainless steel. The reason is its excellent resistance to corrosion and pitting corrosion. In comparison, another pipe material, SS 316, has a higher carbon content (about 0.08%), which makes its strength and hardness slightly higher than SS 316L.
316L stainless steel pipe and 316 stainless steel pipe are very similar in many aspects, with almost no differences. The only difference is their carbon content. Since 316L has lower carbon content, it has better corrosion resistance than 316. In addition, 316L does not require annealing after welding.
316L steel pipe is a hollow steel material, generally in the shape of a long circular strip.
