S275jr vs A36
Standards
A36 Steel: Complies with ASTM A36/A36M standards, and is an American standard carbon structural steel.
S275JR Steel: Complies with European standard EN10025-2 (e.g., EN10025-2:2014 or EN10025-2:2019), and is a European standard carbon structural steel.
Chemical Composition
A36 Steel: The main chemical components include carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S). Specifically, the carbon content is ≤0.25%, the manganese content is between 0.8% and 1.2% (the range may vary slightly depending on the source), the phosphorus content is ≤0.04%, and the sulfur content is ≤0.05%.
S275JR Steel: The main chemical components also include carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S), as well as possible trace alloying elements such as copper (Cu). Taking a steel plate thickness ≤40mm as an example, its carbon content ≤0.21%, manganese content ≤1.50%, phosphorus content ≤0.035%, sulfur content ≤0.035%, and nitrogen content ≤0.012%.
Chemical Composition Comparison
| Element | S275JR (%) | A36 (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤0.21 | 0.26-0.28 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤0.50 | ≤0.55 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤1.50 | 1.03-1.20 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤0.035 | ≤0.04 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤0.035 | ≤0.05 |
| Nitrogen (N) | ≤0.012 | - |
Mechanical Properties
A36 Steel: Possesses high strength, high toughness, good plasticity, and processing properties. Yield strength is typically ≥360MPa (some sources state ≥250MPa, but A36 steel usually has a higher yield strength).
S275JR Steel: Yield strength reaches 275MPa (some data indicate its yield point is not lower than 270MPa, but 275MPa is its standard value), tensile strength is between 430~580MPa, and elongation after fracture ≥14%. Furthermore, S275JR steel also has good impact toughness and bending properties.
Mechanical Properties Comparison
| Property | S275JR (MPa) | A36 (MPa) |
|---|---|---|
| Yield Strength (Re) | ≥270 | ≥250 |
| Tensile Strength (Rm) | 430-580 | 400-550 |
| Elongation (A) | ≥14% | ≥18% |
Delivery Conditions and Applications
A36 Steel: Widely used in construction, bridges, and machinery manufacturing, such as in the manufacture of beams, columns, steel plates, and steel structural frames for buildings; housings and bases for large motors and various pumps; and precision parts processing.
S275JR Steel: Delivery conditions include hot-rolled, controlled-rolled, and normalized. It is also widely used in construction, bridges, and machinery manufacturing, but more often in structural components requiring high load-bearing capacity and good toughness, such as bridges, high-rise buildings, industrial plants, various mechanical parts, bearings, transmission devices, structural components in shipbuilding, and equipment in the energy industry such as oil pipelines and storage tanks.
