SHS is a special-shaped steel tube, short for Square Hollow Section. As its name suggests, this steel is a square, hollow tube. It has four equal sides, four right angles, and is completely hollow inside. This structure allows it to maintain the strength characteristics of steel while reducing weight due to its hollow design. SHS steel is widely used in construction, machinery manufacturing, and other fields, and is particularly suitable for scenarios requiring a balance between strength and lightweighting.

Applications

1. Building Structures

Due to its light weight and high bending strength, SHS square tubes are widely used in building frames, curtain wall supports, and roof trusses. Common specifications range from 100×100×4mm to 200×200×8mm, with spans from 6 to 12 meters.

2. Machinery Manufacturing and Transportation

In automated equipment, conveyor supports, and other applications, SHS square tubes are used to create lightweight load-bearing structures. Taking the AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) frame as an example, galvanized square tubing of 40×40×2mm is typically used, balancing strength and rust resistance. According to the *Mechanical Engineering Handbook*, square tubing with a wall thickness ≥2.5mm has a static load-bearing capacity exceeding 500kg/m (based on Q235 material).

3. Home and Decoration Applications

With its ease of processing and modern industrial appearance, SHS steel square tubing has become a popular material for custom furniture (such as bookshelves and coffee tables). Decorative square tubing often uses a thin-walled design (1.2-2mm), and the surface can be sprayed or electroplated. Common market sizes range from 20×20×1.2mm to 50×50×2mm, with a cost approximately 1.2 times that of round tubing.
