What is the difference between SHS and CHS tube

CHS (Circular Steel Frames) are seamless or welded steel tubes with a circular cross-section. They are commonly used in truss systems, space frames, and offshore structures due to their excellent torsional resistance and uniform strength in all directions.

SHS (Structural Steel Frames) are similar to RHS (Circular Steel Frames), but with a square cross-section. They are commonly used in structural frames, truss systems, and support columns, offering excellent load-bearing capacity and ease of manufacture.

SHS V.S CHS Tube

Feature SHS (Square Hollow Section) CHS (Circular Hollow Section)
‌Cross-sectional shape‌ Square (all sides equal) Circular (uniform radius)
‌Bending performance‌ Isotropic (consistent strength in all directions)
Prone to stress concentration at corners
Uniform bending (no stress concentration points)
Higher torsional resistance
‌Compressive performance‌ Good (suitable for axial loads) Excellent (symmetric section, efficient load distribution)
‌Connection convenience‌ High (easy to bolt or weld on flat surfaces, simple alignment) Medium-low (requires flanges or welded rings, complex directional connection)
‌Common manufacturing standards‌ ASTM A500, EN 10219, JIS G3466 ASTM A500, EN 10219, JIS G3466
‌Typical applications‌ Building frame beams, structural joints, machinery bases Load-bearing columns, pipeline systems, pressure vessels, bridge supports
