A333 Grade 6 Seamless Pipe description
ASTM A333 GR.6 is a standard for seamless steel pipes used in cryogenic applications, developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). This standard specifies the mechanical properties and chemical composition requirements for steel pipes in cryogenic environments, ensuring they maintain good toughness and impact resistance at temperatures as low as -45°C or even lower. GR.6 is a grade within this standard specifically designed for cryogenic services. The pipe dimensions are 88.9 x 5.49 mm, with an outer diameter of 88.9 mm and a wall thickness of 5.49 mm. This specification of pipe is typically used in small to medium-sized piping systems suitable for transporting cryogenic liquids or gases.

Impact Testing of A333 GR.6 Steel Pipes
ASTM A333/ASME SA333 standards explicitly require that A333 GR.6 steel pipes undergo a Charpy V-notch (CVN) impact test at -50°F (-45°C).
The test must meet the minimum absorbed energy requirement (typically 20 ft·lbf or 27 J) to ensure the material's resistance to brittle fracture at low temperatures.
Test Objectives
Verification of Low-Temperature Toughness: By simulating actual low-temperature environments, the impact absorption energy of the steel pipe at -50°F (-45°C) is tested to prevent engineering accidents caused by brittle fracture.
Quality Control: To ensure that each batch of steel pipes meets the mechanical property standards for low-temperature service.
